Construction on the Federation Starship Saladin, the lead vessel of the Saladin class destroyer, was authorized by the Star Fleet Appropriation of Stardate 0965[1] and commissioned in 2185.[2] Lieutenant Commander Leonard Konigsburg commanded the Saladin until circa 2203, when Commander James T. Kirk succeeded him as the ship's captain, until his promotion and transfer to the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 in 2207.[3] Kirk was joined by Lieutenant Gary Mitchell, whom Kirk had requested on his first command.[4]
