Rand[1] was assigned to the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701[2] as a security officer.[3] On Stardate 1513.1, Ensign Rand manned the helm station during an incident on planet M-113[2] as well as the mission to Psi 2000 on Stardate 1704.2 after Lieutenant Sulu was infected with polywater intoxication.[4] Rand was in the rec room aboard the Enterprise when Charlie Evans was aboard the ship, and enjoyed listening to the songs that Lieutenant Uhura sang that poked fun at the ship's officers.[5] Rand was at the navigation console[6] when the ship left Talos IV on Stardate 3013.2.[7] He took the helm once again on Stardate 3025.3, when the ship discovered the Amusement Planet.[8] Rand, now a lieutenant, was also on the surface of Omicron Ceti III,[9] collecting material to be beamed back up to the ship, and was among the first to be controlled by the pod plant spores.[10] On Stardate 3196.1, Rand was part of a security team led by Lieutenant Commander Giotto in the search for the Horta on Janus VI. He was attacked by the miners on Janus VI and clubbed several times on his head.[3] Rand was tasked with another security officer to accompany Captain Kirk, Commander Spock, and Lieutenant Commander Mulhall to Arret on Stardate 4768.3, but interference from Sargon prevented the security officers from beaming down with the rest of the landing party.[11]

Notes and References
- ↑ Lieutenant Rand's name and rank were given in the script for "The Man Trap" as Lieutenant Ryan, but were not spoken in dialogue; he appeared again in "The Naked Time" and was referred to in dialogue as Rand. Additionally, although the script for "The Man Trap" named him as a lieutenant, he had no rank insignia, which would otherwise indicate that he was an ensign. Eddie Paskey also played Lieutenant Leslie, who frequently manned the Engineering station on the bridge, and also wore a red shirt; the two appeared simultaneously on the bridge in "The Menagerie, Part II." Rand began wearing lieutenant stripes in "This Side of Paradise." When Paskey appeared in a red uniform, if he was performing security or navigation duties, it is concluded that he was portraying Rand; if he was performing engineering duties, then he was portraying Leslie.

- ↑ Eddie Paskey appeared briefly in a scene on the surface of Omicron Ceti III shortly before another scene shows him about to beam down to the planet, apparently for the first time. Since both Rand and Leslie wore identical uniforms, it's not a stretch to conclude that Rand was already on the surface before Leslie beamed down.
