(The root of all realities)

Stardate {{link|Prime|2268|TOS66|Unknown]]: A malevolent entity pits Klingons against the Enterprise crew.

The Enterprise and a Klingon battlecruiser commanded by Kang cross paths in orbit of planet Beta XII-A. Captain Kirk is convinced that the Klingons have murdered the Federation colonists on the planet, while Kang thinks the Enterprise is responsible for damaging his ship and killing most of his crew. He takes the Federation personnel prisoner on the planet's surface, and they beam aboard the Enterprise under guard, but a signal arranged with Spock enables Kirk to turn the tables on Kang by beaming up before the Klingons.

Kang and his crew are detained, but in reality, all the trouble has been caused by a malevolent energy being that feeds off of agressive emotions. The entity is now aboard the Enterprise, and it turns the starship into a battleground. Phasers are transformed into swords, fatal wounds heal themselves, injured individuals recover and fight again and again. Chekov goes completely berserk and attacks Kang's wife, science officer Mara. Kirk stops the ensign, then tells Mara that the Federation crew and the Klingons have a common enemy aboard the Enterprise. With her assistance, he is able to convince Kang that they are all being manipulated by a hostile entity. The two commanders call a truce and join in laughter. The entity, having no taste for these peaceful emotions, is driven from the ship, and the Klingons are dropped off at the nearest Federation outpost.
