Platinum, element 78, was discovered in Italy on Earth in 1557.[1] Platinum was found in appreciable quantities on Janus VI.[2] Spock wanted gold to create a mnemonic memory circuit when he and Captain Kirk time traveled to 1930, but the pair did not have the money to buy any appreciable quantities of the metal.[3]
