The Constitution class Starship Republic[Notes 1] was commissioned on Reference Stardate 1/8805[2] (May 2245).[Notes 2] James T. Kirk served aboard the Republic[3] for his first cadet cruise in 2254 while attending Starfleet Academy.[4] While aboard the vessel, he befriended an older officer, Lieutenant Ben Finney, but that friendship didn't prevent Kirk from logging an incident in which Finney left a circuit to the vessel's reactor core open, endangering the ship. The incident report caused Finney to be moved to the bottom of the promotions list, and resulted more than a decade of enmity from the older man.[3] The Republic later resolved the threat of piracy by Orion raiders in the Volus Corridor, and deterred Klingon border incursions along the Neutral Zone.[5] V'Shall completed his cadet cruise aboard the Republic on Reference Stardate 1/98 (2255), then stayed aboard until Reference Stardate 2/04 (2261). Octavio Rodriguez also completed his cadet cruise aboard the Republic on Reference Stardate 2/00 (2257).[6]
The Republic was lost and officially declared missing on Reference Stardate 2/0808.26 (26 August 2266), although it was believed that the ship may have been missing as much as seven months prior to that.[7] Fifteen years later, on Stardate 8087.3[8] (Reference Stardate 2/2304,[7] April 2281), the Republic was discovered in the Styx Rift by the U.S.S. Excalibur NCC-1711; the crew had been taken over by the same species of Neural parasites that attacked Deneva in 2266, but fast thinking by the ship's science officer, Lieutenant Commander Xepesna, left the ship stranded in the rift for fifteen years. At the time of its disappearance, the Republic was commanded by Captain Richard V. Masterson; his first officer was Commander Talia Janovich. Lieutenant Chal'n Dax served as chief helmsman, and Doctor T'Narra was chief medical officer; Lieutenant Commander Bahrrr was the ship's chief engineer, Lieutenant R'Randrr was the communications officer, and Lieutenant Juliet Rodriguez was the ship's assistant science officer.[8]
Notes
- ↑ The registry listed for the Republic in the "Star Fleet Technical Manual," NCC-1373, conflicts with other sources and must be disregarded.
- ↑ FASA game materials referred to events by a FASA-specific dating standard called the "Reference Stardate." All dates taken from FASA sources in this article have been adapted from that notation into standard calendar dates, which are then adjusted for errors in the baseline dates used as reference by the FASA authors. Working with a known, dated event (e.g., the launch of the Constitution class starships), the other dates in the timeline can be adjusted accordingly. FASA sources give the launch of the Constitution class as Reference Stardate 1/8801.04, which translates to the standard caldendar date of 04 January 2188. This has been established on screen, however, as occurring in 2245. As the exact month and date remain unstated in other sources, those remain the same, but the year has been adjusted to 2245, giving a modified date of 04 January 2245. This can then also be converted into the pre-TOS stardate system established in Star Trek (2009), giving us a stardate of 2245.004.
