Lieutenant Karl Jaeger was a geophysicist assigned to the Sciences Division aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 in 2267. On Stardate 2124.5, he assumed the helm when Lieutenant Sulu disappeared while the ship was orbiting Gothos. He was then assigned to a landing party sent to investigate the disappearance of Sulu and Captain James T. Kirk. When he met Trelane, the self-titled "Squire of Gothos" recognized his German name and attempted to speak to him in the German language. Assuming the Enterprise crew are like the 19th-century Humans he had observed from afar, Trelane called him a "Deutsche Soldat," or "German soldier," but Jaeger insisted that he was a scientist, not a soldier.[1]
