The M-5 computer was designed by Dr. Richard Daystrom to be the most ambitious computer complex ever created. Its purpose was to correlate all computer activity aboard a starship, providing the ultimate in vessel operation and control. On Stardate 4729.4, the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 was chosen to test the M-5's capabilities. During the test, it was revealed that Daystrom had copied his own brain engrams into the computer, leading to erratic behavior and multiple deaths. Before it could be disengaged, the M-5 destroyed the S.S. Woden, an unmanned ore freighter, as well as severely damaging the U.S.S. Excalibur NCC-1664, U.S.S. Hood NCC-1703, U.S.S. Lexington NCC-1709, and U.S.S. Potemkin NCC-1657 and killing hundreds of personnel aboard those ships.[1]
