Lieutenant Areel Shaw was an attorney in the Starfleet Judge Advocate General. She and Captain James T. Kirk dated briefly in 2263. In 2267, she was assigned to Starbase 11, and on Stardate 2948.9, she was assigned to prosecute Kirk in a court martial on charges of negligence in the death of Lieutenant Commander Ben Finney. Although she was duty-bound to have him "slapped down hard" and "broken out of the service, in disgrace," she helped Kirk retain Samuel Cogley as his defense attorney. Ultimately, however, Finney was discovered to have faked his death in an attempt to frame Kirk, and the charges against the captain were dropped.[1]
