The Enterprise escapes with both the device and confirmation of a Klingon/Romulan technological agreement. The device works once while escaping from the Romulan Neutral Zone, but later fails to function when detached from the Enterprise. The mechanism is examined and duplicated by Federation scientists, but the prototype later fails in a particularly nasty fashion, and research and development aimed toward making cloaking devices operational on Federation ships is eventually halted. * Reference Stardate 2/1004: Despite intense examination by the best minds in the Federation, the Romulan cloaking device remains a mystery. Nevertheless, political pressures force [[Starfleet to make a public demonstration of the stolen device. It is installed on a Federation ship, and dignitaries from all over the Federation fill both that ship and the vessel observing the experiment. When the cloaking device is activated, both ships disappear. Seconds later, there is a gigantic explosion, and neither ship ever reappears. Scientists stop all attempts to duplicate the cloaking device. Federation Council members who advocated a harder position against the Romulans, and who gained in stature because of the success of Operation Purloin, lose credibility because of the disaster. Note

Using the stardate given in "Charlie X" (1533.1), coupled with the calendar date given in that episode ("Thanksgiving," which falls on 23 November in 2265), a range of stardates for 2268 was devised: 4794-5999, which results in 3.29 stardates per 24 hours. Using this range as a guide, the following ranges were calculated per month for 2268:

• January: 4794-4895
• February: 4896-4990
• March: 4991-5092
• April: 5093-5191
• May: 5192-5293
• June: 5294-5392
• July: 5393-5494
• August: 5495-5596
• September: 5597-5695
• October: 5696-5797
• November: 5798-5896
• December: 5897-5999

These date ranges are, of course, approximate; calendar dates on other entries have been calculated based upon these ranges, except where explicitly given in the original story.
