A phase one search was a painstaking, thorough attempt in and around a ship to locate a missing person who was presumed to be injured and unable to respond. Following the jettisoning of the ship's ion pod, the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 conducted a phase one search for the pod's occupant, Lieutenant Commander Ben Finney, but could not locate him, as he was hiding in an attempt to frame Captain James T. Kirk for his apparent death.^[1]
