After First Contact has been established with a species, the process of Second Contact begins. During second contact, the representatives of the United Federation of Planets meet with the leaders of the newly-contacted species. According to Ensign Brad Boimler, this is when "we get all the paperwork signed, make sure we're spelling the name of the planet right, [and] get to know all the good places to eat," among other diplomatic tasks.
