Construction on the Federation Starship Republic,[1] a Constitution class vessel, was authorized by the Starfleet Appropriation of Stardate 0965.[2] The Republic was commissioned on Reference Stardate 1/8805 (May 2245).[3] James T. Kirk served aboard the Republic[4] for his first cadet cruise in 2254 while attending Starfleet Academy.[5] While aboard the vessel, he befriended an older officer, Lieutenant Ben Finney, but that friendship didn't prevent Kirk from logging an incident in which Finney left a circuit to the vessel's reactor core open, endangering the ship. The incident report caused Finney to be moved to the bottom of the promotions list, and resulted more than a decade of enmity from the older man.[4] V'Shall completed his cadet cruise aboard the Republic on Reference Stardate 1/98 (2256), then stayed aboard until Reference Stardate 2/04 (2262). Octavio Rodriguez also completed his cadet cruise aboard the Republic on Reference Stardate 2/00 (2258).[6]

At one time, the Republic was notable for having a multispecies crew consisting primarily of Kzinti, Orions, and Trisk, with only six Humans. One of the six Humans was Maria Kellogg, who served as the ship's chief engineer.[7] The Republic was refit to Mark III specifications on Reference Stardate 2/0309 (September 2261).[3]

In the 2260s, the Republic was under the command of Captain Richard Cornelius Patterson. The ship's assignments during this period included the transport of an investigating committee to Vardaine[8] and sensor scans of the remains of the Gadani II supernova. The Republic also recovered a recorder-marker buoy from the U.S.S. Calypso, which detailed that vessel's destruction by parasitic creatures.[9] In 2268, the Republic was attacked by a Vardaine duplicate of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701. Nearly the entire crew, including Captain Patterson, was killed in the battle, and the Republic was left derelict by the attack. The Enterprise later engaged and destroyed the Vardaine duplicate.[8]

On Stardate 5828.3, the Republic, now under the command of Captain Manchu, along with the U.S.S. Excelsior NCC-1718, was dispatched to Altair VII in response to an unknown entity that was attacking locations in the Federation. Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise, also responding to the emergency, discovered that a vast machine planet intelligence from a parallel universe, called Nagha, was behind the attacks.[10]

The Republic, now commanded by Captain Richard V. Masterson, was officially declared lost on Reference Stardate 2/0808.26 (26 August 2269),[11] although it was believed that the ship may have been missing as many as seven months prior to that.[12] Nearly twenty years later, on Stardate 8087.3[13] (Reference Stardate 2/2304 (April 2286),[12] the Republic was discovered in the Styx Rift by the U.S.S. Excalibur NCC-1711; the crew had been taken over by the same species of neural parasites that attacked Deneva in 2266, but fast thinking by the ship's science officer, Lieutenant Commander Xepesna, left the ship stranded in the rift. At the time of its disappearance, the Republic crew included first officer was Commander Talia Janovich. Lieutenant Chal'n Dax served as chief helmsman, and Doctor T'Narra was chief medical officer; Lieutenant Commander Bahrrr was the ship's chief engineer, Lieutenant R'Randrr was the communications officer, and Lieutenant Juliet Rodriguez was the ship's assistant science officer. Due to the effects of relativistic sublight travel, the crew experienced a far shorter span of elapsed time than twenty years.[13] During the years in which the Republic was believed to have been destroyed, a new vessel bearing the name was commissioned. Upon the return of the original Republic, both ships continued to serve simultaneously.[3]

The Republic was soon upgraded to the Enterprise subclass specifications,[14] and later resolved the threat of piracy by Orion raiders in the Volus Corridor, and deterred Klingon border incursions along the Neutral Zone in 2287.[15] In 2293, the Republic was assigned to patrol the Klingon Neutral Zone, according to a status display on the bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-A.[16]

Masterson, was officially declared lost on Reference Stardate 2/0808.26 (26 August 2208), although it was believed that the ship may have been missing as many as seven months prior to that.[12] Fifteen years later, on Stardate 8087.3[13] (Reference Stardate 2/2304 (April 2223)[12]), the Republic was discovered in the Styx Rift by the U.S.S. Excalibur NCC-1711; the crew had been taken over by the same species of neural parasites that attacked Deneva in 2209, but fast thinking by the ship's science officer, Lieutenant Commander Xepesna, left the ship stranded in the rift.
