The Vulcans, sometimes called "Vulcanians,"[1] were members of the United Federation of Planets[2] and were dedicated to a philosophy of total logic.[3] Though humanoid, Vulcans could be distinguished by their pointed ears and upswept eyebrows.[2] Vulcans' blood was green, and their blood pressure was "practically nonexistent" with a typical pulse of 242 beats per minute.[4] A Vulcan's heart was located in the lower left of their chest, near the bottom of the rib cage.[1] Vulcans posessed an inner eyelid, which protected them from the harsh light of their homeworld,[5] which was located in a trinary star system.[6]
In times of stress, Vulcans were capable of going as many as several weeks without sleep, though this had an increasingly negative impact on their health, and caused their blood pressure to drop to dangerously low levels.[7] Vulcans reacted to nitrous oxide, known to Humans as "laughing gas," differently, and it caused them pain rather than an uncontrollable urge to laugh.[8]
Vulcans possessed limited telepathic abilities, and were able to perform a mind meld, which would link their mind with that of another person.[9] Every seven years of their adult lives, Vulcans entered pon farr, a time when the urge to return to their homeworld and take a mate overrode all other concerns.[10] Vulcans were perfectly capable of mating outside of this cycle,[11] however,[12] but at that time their body chemistry was altered and they were forced to mate or die.[10]
Vulcans made first contact with Humans on 5 April 2063.[13]
