Prime Timeline
(The root of all realities)

Invented by Dr. Simon van Gelder, the neural neutralizer was intended as a method to aid his patients at the Tantalus V penal asylum in regaining their sanity. The device placed a person in a highly-suggestible state, which would allow van Gelder to condition the patient away from their individual disorders. His associate, Dr. Tristan Adams, however, sought to use the device for his own personal gain. He used it on van Gelder, causing him to appear psychotic and to induce pain any time he attempted to explain who he was or what had happened to him. When he attempted to use the machine on Captain James T. Kirk of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701, however, he was stopped, and the machine activated while he was in the room alone. With no one to turn it off, Adams was killed. After van Gelder was returned to his previous mental state, he swore to dismantle the device.[1]
