A heater was a device used to increase the temperature of a given space. Sometimes the devices were called thermal heaters. When the transporter aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 malfunctioned, leaving a landing party stranded on the surface of Alfa 177 as temperatures began to plummet, the crew attempted to beam heaters to their stranded crewmates. Unfortunately, while the malfunction caused the devices to double, it also rendered them inoperative.[1]
