Prime Timeline
(The root of all realities)

The practice of "wiving settlers," as it was called by Harry Mudd on Stardate 1329.1, was a form of arranged marriage. Mudd served as an intermediary between three women and three dilithium miners on Rigel XII. Unknown to the miners, however, Mudd had gotten the women addicted to an illegal Venus drug that purportedly enhanced their physical characteristics, and hoped to swindle as much money out of the miners as possible. When the fraud was exposed, the marriages had already been finalized over subspace radio, but Captain Kirk of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 was confident that they could be easily annuled if the miners so chose.[1]
