Lieutenant Commander Jeannette Chao served as chief engineer aboard Deep Space 9. Chao had previously served with Lieutenant Prynn Tenmei aboard the U.S.S. Mjolnir, under Captain Kalena Hoku, a native Hawaiian, who tried to teach the junior officers how to surf on the ship's holodeck. "He'e nalu," or "wave sliding," came easily enough to Tenmei, but Chao never mastered the sport.[1] Chao was killed when the station was destroyed in 2383.[2]
