Perhaps the most famous spacecraft in the history of space exploration, the {{link|FASA|United Federation of Planets||Federation}} Starship ''Enterprise,'' a {{link|FASA|Constitution class||''Constitution'' class}} cruiser,<ref name="TOS42"/> was launched on {{link|FASA|Reference Stardate}} {{link|FASA|2188|February|1/8802 (February 2188)}}<ref name="FASA2302E2"/> from the {{link|FASA|San Francisco Fleet Yards}}<ref name="TOS00"/> orbiting {{link|FASA|Earth}}. Construction on the ''Enterprise'' was authorized by the {{link|FASA|Starfleet Appropriations|Stardate 0965|Star Fleet Appropriation of Stardate 0965}}.<ref name="SFTM"/> The ''Enterprise'' was first commanded by {{link|FASA|Star Fleet Captain||Captain}} {{link|FASA|Robert April}},<ref name="TAS22"/> who was later succeeded by {{link|FASA|Christopher Pike}} on Reference Stardate {{link|FASA|2195|January|1/9501 (January 2195)}}.<ref name="FASA2214"/> During Pike's command, the ''Enterprise'' had a crew complement of 203, though it was unclear if this figure included Pike himself.<ref name="TOS00"/> According to {{link|FASA|Star Fleet Ensign||Ensign}} {{link|FASA|Jose Tyler||Tyler}}, the ship's power was "enough to blast half a continent."<ref name="TOS00"/> Superbly equipped for research in deep space, the ''Enterprise'' had 14 science labs.<ref name="TOS29"/> The ship achieved legendary status during the first five-year mission under its third captain, {{link|FASA|James T. The ''Enterprise'' was refit several times during its lifetime, most notably from {{link|FASA|2212}} to {{link|FASA|2217}}, when the ship was virtually rebuilt from the inside out.<ref name="ST01"/> On {{link|FASA|Stardate}} {{link|FASA|2212|SD7523|7523.2 (April 7, 2212)}} the ''Enterprise'' returned to Earth orbit following her last, historic five-year mission. Although the decision had been made three months earlier to decommission and scrap the ''Enterprise,'' the ship had come to be seen as a symbol of {{link|FASA|Star Fleet}} and the Federation. This public opinion drove a motion in the {{link|FASA|Federation Council}} that led to the reversal of Star Fleet's plans. The ''Enterprise,'' however, was still twenty-five years old; her systems were becoming outdated, and it soon became obvious that only a major refit could keep the ship at the forefront of the fleet, and what began as a simple refit evolved into a redesign of the entire vessel.<ref name="MSG"/>

Though commanded by Captain {{link|FASA|Will Decker}} during the refit, Kirk&mdash;who had been promoted to {{link|FASA|Star Fleet Admiral||admiral}} in {{link|FASA|2212}}&mdash;took temporary command of the vessel during the {{link|FASA|V'ger}} incident of {{link|FASA|2217}}; Decker was lost during the mission,<ref name="ST01"/> and Kirk took command of the ''Enterprise'' for another five-year mission.<ref name="FASA2004A"/> Eventually, the ship became a training vessel at {{link|FASA|Star Fleet Academy}} under Captain {{link|FASA|Spock}}.<ref name="ST02"/>  In {{link|FASA|2222}}, Kirk was commandant of the Academy, and took temporary command of the ''Enterprise'' while overseeing a cadet cruise when the ship encountered {{link|FASA|Khan Noonien Singh}} in the {{link|FASA|Mutara Sector}}. Spock was killed saving the ship,<ref name="ST02"/> but the ''Enterprise'' was later destroyed by Admiral Kirk just prior to its anticipated decommissioning, in order to prevent it from falling into {{link|FASA|Klingon Empire||Klingon}} hands during a mission to recover Captain Spock's body.<ref name="ST03"/>
