Dilithium, element 119, was discovered on [[Amalthea (FASA)|Amalthea]], [[Jupiter (FASA)|Jupiter]]'s fifth moon, in [[2040s (FASA)#2049|2049]]. The most stable isotope discovered had a mass of 315.<ref name="MRM"/>

Dilithium crystals were the primary power source of starships, such as the [[U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 (FASA)|U.S.S. ''Enterprise'' NCC-1701]].<ref name="TOS20"/> Automated stations were used to "crack" dilithium; one such station was located on [[Delta Vega]].<ref name="lithium"/> When the ''Enterprise's'' dilithium crystals were damaged in an encounter with the [[Galactic Barrier]] on [[Stardate]] [[Prime Chronology: 2266#SD1312|1312.4]], [[Starfleet Ranks#Captain|Captain]] [[Kirk, James T.|Kirk]] used the automated station there to repair his ship.<ref name="TOS01"/>

When the dilithium<ref name="lithium"/> crystals aboard the ''Enterprise'' were burned out while rescuing [[Mudd, Harry|Harry Mudd]] when his [[Class J cargo ship|ship]] was destroyed in an asteroid field on [[Stardate]] [[Prime Chronology: 2266#SD1329|1329.1]], Captain Kirk was forced to negotiate for replacement crystals with a group of miners on [[Rigel XII]], negotiations that were complicated by interference from Mudd.<ref name="TOS03"/> On [[Stardate]] [[Prime Chronology: 2266#SD3087|3087.6]], while the ''Enterprise'' was investigating moments of galaxy-wide "nonexistence," which [[Starfleet Command]] believed to be a potential prelude to invasion from an [[Myriad Universes|alternate universe]], a being known as [[Lazarus]] and his [[Lazarus (Alternate)|extradimensional counterpart]] stole the ship's dilithium crystals, one in a bid to destroy his counterpart, the other to attempt to seal the rift between the dimensions.<ref name="TOS20"/>
