The Federation Starship Gates, an Einstein class vessel, was in active service in the early 23rd century. While serving aboard the Gates as an ensign, Robert April grew frustrated with the inability of the class to conduct some repairs, which forced the Gates to return to Starbase 9 after observing a supernova.[1]
