Donatra was a senior member of the Romulan military who opposed Shinzon's coup in 2379, who fought against Shinzon in the Battle of Bassen Rift.[1] After Shinzon's death, Senator Tal'aura, the sole remaining member of the Romulan Senate, declared herself Praetor, bringing her into conflict with Donatra, who now controlled the Romulan military's Third and Fifth Fleets with the support of Commander Sulan and former Admiral Braeg. Any hope of a reconciliation between the two sides ended after the execution of Braeg in 2380, and Donatra vowed never to accept Tal'aura's rule. A year later, in 2381, Donatra led a military uprising against Tal'aura, seizing control of several farming worlds and declaring herself Empress of the Imperial Romulan State, planting her flag on Achernar Prime as the fledgling power's capitol world.[2]
