David[1][2] McCoy was married to Maureen (Abney) McCoy. Together, they had five children: Henry Clay McCoy, Leonard McCoy, Landon Abney McCoy, Melissa Jane McCoy, and Elizabeth Abney McCoy.[3] McCoy suffered from a rare and fatal illness, and he begged his son, Leonard, a doctor, to take him off of life support. Leonard acquiesced, only for a cure to be found not long thereafter; the decision would haunt Leonard for the rest of his life.[4]
