Horatius Cocles[1] was a legendary Roman hero. When the Etruscans under King Lars Porsena attempted to capture Rome[2] in 509 BCE,[1] Horatius and two companions[2] attacked the enemy, delaying their advance while other Roman forces destroyed[1] the single bridge crossing the Tiber River, saving the city.[2][3]
