The Malachowski class light cruiser was frequently given to new new Starfleet captains and was considered an excellent training vessel. The class was armed with two forward-facing and one aft-facing weapons emplacements.[1]
The class saw extensive service during the Federation-Klingon War of 2256-2257. In one incident, a Malachowski class vessel on a cadet training cruise, under the command of Captain Anton Schaefer, was ambushed by Klingon forces under the command of J'Ula, matriarch of House Mo'Kai. After Schaefer was killed by J'Ula, the senior cadet took command,[2] and the cadets distinguished themselves to the point that they were granted field promotions[3] and permanent postings to the ship, with the senior cadet promoted to lieutenant and granted command of the ship.[4]
