A textbook was a specalized book designed for use in academic settings. When Doctor McCoy informed Captain Kirk of his concerns regarding Lieutenant Bailey's fitness for duty, which Kirk quickly dismissed, McCoy asked if his promotion of Bailey had anything to do with the lieutenant reminding Kirk of himself a decade earlier. Kirk became irritated and asked if McCoy had been reading his textbooks again.[1]
