Zefram Cochrane was born[1] on Alpha Centauri[2] in 1975.[3] He invented warp drive at virtually the same time as his world was visited by the U.N.S.S. Icarus, and was brought to Earth aboard that vessel upon its return.[1] In 2062,[3] at the age of 87, Cochrane embarked upon a deep-space voyage, where he intended to die in space. Instead, he was found by a noncorporeal lifeform that he dubbed the Companion, which carried him to a planet in the Gamma Canaris system. The Companion restored him to youth, and provided for his every physical need, intending to keep him alive indefinitely.[2]

In 2208,[3] the Companion brought the Shuttlecraft Galileo—containing Star Fleet Captain James T. Kirk, Commander Spock, Doctor Leonard McCoy, and Assistant Federation Commissioner Nancy Hedford, who was dying of the rare Sakuro's disease—to the planet, responding to his desire for contact with other people. Hedford agreed to merge with the Companion, which cured her illness and gave the entity physical form, so that it could finally share its love for Cochrane, who was unable to reciprocate its affection in its noncorporeal state. The two expected to live out the remainder of their normal, human lifespans together, as Hedford/Companion would no longer be able to restore the couple's youth in their combined state. Kirk agreed to keep their existence secret, and officially reported that Hedford had died on the shuttle, with no mention of Cochrane.[2]
