- The second pilot episode, "Where No Man Has Gone Before," is completed and delivered to executives at NBC's New York offices.[1]
February
August
- Gene Roddenberry steps down as producer to become executive producer. Gene L. Coon becomes series producer for the remainder of the first season.[1]
September
- 8 September: "The Man Trap," the fifth episode produced, but the first to finish postproduction, becomes the first episode of Star Trek to air on television.[1]
December
- Star Trek is in danger of cancellation due to lower-than-anticipated ratings. An impassioned letter-writing campaign, spearheaded by a number of well-known and respected science fiction authors, convinces NBC to renew the series for a second season, and not to make any changes to the format in an attempt to appeal to a wider audience.[1]
