January

February

  • NBC accepts the pilot and orders Star Trek to begin production.[1]

August

September

  • 8 September: "The Man Trap," the fifth episode produced, but the first to finish postproduction, becomes the first episode of Star Trek to air on television.[1]

December

  • Star Trek is in danger of cancellation due to lower-than-anticipated ratings. An impassioned letter-writing campaign, spearheaded by a number of well-known and respected science fiction authors, convinces NBC to renew the series for a second season, and not to make any changes to the format in an attempt to appeal to a wider audience.[1]
