In 2267, Ensign Mears was assigned to the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701. On Stardate 2821.5, Mears was selected to be part of a scientific survey expedition aboard the Shuttlecraft Galileo, which was sent to study the so-called "Murasaki Effect" of the Murasaki 312[1] nebula,[2] a rare quasar-like phenomenon. The shuttle crashed on Taurus II, a planet within the nebula, and several members of the team[1] — which was later nicknamed the "Galileo Seven"[2] — were killed before the shuttle could be repaired.[1]

Mears was later reassigned to the frigate U.S.S. Pioneer NCC-1500. On Stardate 6147.4, a science vessel crashed on Taurus II, and Mears was selected to join a search and rescue operation due to her experience on the planet.[2] The search found only four survivors, and learned that the ship was attacked by Klingon forces led by Captain Kor.[3]

Returning to the Pioneer with the survivors, they soon found the ship had been boarded, and Mears helped defend the ship, fighting Klingons in the corridors near the shuttlebay and working to retake Main Engineering.[4] Once the Klingon forces had been defeated and forced to withdraw from the nebula,[5] the ship returned to Earth Spacedock. Once there, Captain Garrett was promoted to admiral and requested that Mears join him on Earth Spacedock as a logistics officer.[6]
