Tal'aura was a member of the Romulan Senate who participated in Shinzon's coup in 2379, planting the thalaron weapon that killed the rest of the Senate, clearing the path for Shinzon's takeover.[1] After his death, Tal'aura was the sole remaining member of the Senate, and she declared herself Praetor soon thereafter. She came into conflict with Commander Donatra, who controlled the Romulan military[2] and who fought against Shinzon in the Battle of Bassen Rift.[1] When the Remans demanded self-sufficiency and either a continent on Romulus or a planet with enough resources to sustain a colony after centuries of exploitation left Remus unstable, Tal'aura cut any further shipments of supplies to Remus. In 2381, a year after ordering the execution of former Admiral Braeg, a large military force under Donatra's command broke away, seizing control of several farming worlds. Calling the fledgling power the Imperial Romulan State, Donatra crowned herself Empress, and declared Achernar Prime the new capitol world.[2]
