The Federation Starship Challenger, the prototype vessel of the Challenger class,[1] was on a deep space exploration mission in 2291 when it was considered for participation in Operation Retrieve, a proposed rescue mission.[2] The Challenger was presumably lost or destroyed some time prior to December 2294, when the name was given to a new Excelsior class vessel, the U.S.S. Challenger NCC-2023.[3]
