Winstead was a cadet at Starfleet Academy in the late 2260s. When Ensign Pavel Chekov encountered a fellow classmate from the class of 2268, he recalled an incident with that classmate that involved "a Rigellian Flame Rose, and the unfortunate activation of fire suppression systems during one of Professor T'Van's lectures," though Chekov's former classmate noted that it had "a pretty positive impression on Cadet Winstead."[1]
