As an ensign, Robert April served aboard the Einstein class U.S.S. Gates in 2217. April noted in his personal log at the time that he had grown frustrated with the inability of the class to conduct some repairs, which forced the ship to return to Starbase 9 after observing a supernova.[1]
For three years, April served as first officer aboard the Baton Rouge class U.S.S. Los Angeles, after which he requested a transfer to the Starfleet Logistics Command to pursue his dream of designing a new starship class with more robust, self-sufficient capabilities.[1]
In 2245, April assumed command as the first captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701[2] and commanded the ship until 2250.[1]
When he was offered a promotion to commodore,[2] which would keep him on Earth, he accepted, with the expressed desire to start a family.[1] Upon his promotion was succeeded by his first officer[1] Christopher Pike.[2][1]
