Dr. Tristan Adams was the chief psychiatrist and director of the penal asylum on Tantalus V in 2266. He used the neural neutralizer, an experimental creation by Dr. Simon van Gelder, in unethical experiments on the inmates. When he was confronted by van Gelder, Adams used the device to brainwash him into behaving as though he was mentally unbalanced as well. Van Gelder managed to escape to the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 on Stardate 2715.1. When Captain Kirk went down to Tantalus V to investigate the asylum, Adams attempted to use the neural neutralizer on him, but soon found the device turned against him instead. Adams died when the machine activated on maximum power with no one else around to deactivate it.[1]
