The Betans were a humanoid species native to Beta III in System C111. They had a technologically advanced society c.3793 BCE, when they fought devastating wars that ended when one of their leaders, Landru, created a computer that absorbed everyone into "the Body," erasing their free will and regressing them to an early industrial state. This remained the status quo for the next six millennia, until 2207, when the Landru computer was rendered inactive by Captain James T. Kirk of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701.[1] By 2223, the Betan population numbered 6 billion.[2]
