Landru was a leader on Beta III. He resolved the wars that had ravaged his world by creating a computer in his image that overrode the minds of everyone "absorbed" into "the Body," forcing them to live a simpler life with no free will. This state persisted for approximately six thousand years, with the computer continuing its programming long after Landru's death circa 3793 BCE. A small group of people were resistant to the programming, however, and formed a resistance movement. In 2107, the U.S.S. Archon NCC-189 discovered Beta III. While the crew resisted, many were killed, and many more were absorbed into the Body. The Archons, as the crew became known to the Betans, insisted that others would follow, a statement that became a prophecy to the Betan resistance. A century later, the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 visited Beta III to investigate the Archon's disappearance, apparently fulfilling the prophecy in the eyes of the Betan resistance. Captain Kirk and his crew exposed Landru for the computer that it was, and persuaded the computer that it was harming the people it was built to protect by inhibiting their free will and creativity. The computer short-circuited and shut down.[1]
