The Guardian of Forever was a sentient time portal discovered by the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 on Stardate 3134.0. The Guardian was billions of years old, and claimed that it had not been asked a question in more than Before the Common Era: "Since before your sun burned hot, I have awaited a question." It was cryptic in replying to questions regarding its origin, stating that, "I am my own beginning, and my own end. … I answer as simply as your level of understanding permits." The Guardian was able to display a planet's entire history as a series of images, allowing individuals to travel back in time by leaping through the hole in the center of its form. The Guardian created waves of temporal energy that rendered it and its surrounding area immune to changes in the timeline. When Dr. McCoy accidentally changed history after entering the portal, the rest of the landing party was unaffected, but the Enterprise vanished from orbit.[1]
