The Hydran Kingdoms' Hunter class (HN) frigate was commissioned circa 2250, and was described as a "suicide ship," a reputation that its combat history did much to bolster, due to the aggressive tactics on the part of some of the ships' crews. An analysis of major fleet actions indicated an overall tendency for small ships, such as the Hunter class, to be lost at a higher rate than larger cruisers. The Hunter class had a number of variants, including the Gendarme class police ship, the hellbore-armed Cuirassier class frigate, the Crusader class frigate leader, the Buffalo Hunter class war destroyer, the Rhino Hunter class war destroyer, and the Lion Hunter class destroyer leader. The HN featured a crew complement of 100, a capacity of three shuttlecraft, and was equipped with two science labs, one transporter, and one tractor beam emitter. The HN was armed with two fusion beam emitters, three banks of Type-2 phasers, and one bank of Type-G Gatling phasers. The HN-type remained in service until 2296.

Initially deployed concurrently with the LNG-type Lancer class commando destroyer, the HNG-type Hunter class commando frigate was introduced circa 2250 and continued in service into the 24th century. The ships were too small for general duty at the height of the General War, but their ease of production kept them in service well past their time. The HNG featured a crew complement of 200 — including 140 Marines housed in two barracks — a capacity of five shuttlecraft, and was equipped with two science labs, three transporters, and one tractor beam emitter. The HNG was armed with three banks of Type-2 phasers and one bank of Type-G Gatling phasers.[1]
