Silence. I remember the silence the most. —Dennis R. Ricketts, "Patrol."

It is 1984 and Nexus #8 had just been released. This issue had "History of the Second World War" which was background for a game of the same name and Starfire with a history of their Orions. Of course there was a section on the Star Fleet Universe, too. In that section you would find "Patrol" by Dennis R. Ricketts, an article on names of Federation ships, some scenarios, term papers, and the Academy. These appeared along with a Q&A with Steve Cole. There was also the inevitable (at the time) collection of errata.

Starfire had a good number of articles. There was one on the Khanate of Orion, one on Khanate Military Service, and one on incidents from the first interstellar war. There was also an interesting pair of articles examining balanced design.

For the historical gamer there was the aforementioned background on the forthcoming game History of the Second World War and a timeline of events in the Russian campaigns. There was also a scenario for Battlewagon ("The Last Sortie of the Yamato," released in PDF as "Battlewagon Article #3"). There were reviews of the computer games Computer Football Strategy, Telengard, Cyborg, and The Pharaoh's Curse.

Patrol

by Dennis Ricketts

SN8.0 Patrol, Part I

In Y179, a patrol of F-18s became the first to encounter the new Klingon G-1 gunboats.

SN9.0 Patrol, Part II

Having destroyed the fighters, the G-1s went on to destroy their carrier. Federation relief forces were on the way, and the G-1s only had time for one pass.

SN10.0 Ares is Down!

by Scott Abel

The Federation destroyer Ares was on a routine patrol near the Tholian order in Y168 when its warp engine overloaded and had to be jettisoned. The saucer made a forced landing on a planet in Tholian territory. The Federation considered the incident to be a non-military rescue situation; the Tholians cosidered it to be a clandestine operation to spy on their territory. Negotiations proved fruitless (as they had only three years previously), and the new sector Commodore, Richard Grey in his flagship Excalibur, was sent to rescue the crew. Grey's orders were to get the crew off of the planet with the minimum use of force.

Shipyard Report: Federation Ship Names

This is the second in a series of articles that will list known ship names for a given fleet. The list given in this article is not intended to be a complete or all-inclusive list of every ship to ever serve in the Federation Star Fleet. Rather, it is a representative sample of ships known to have been in service at one time or another during the period Y150-Y185

Captain's Log Issue 3 Part II

Due to a succession of nearly impossible errors, three sections were accidentally deleted from Captain's Log #3. These include part of the story from page 9 (column 1, between the 5th and 6th paragraph), parts of Scenario SL53, all of Scenario SL68, and parts of Scenario SL69. These missing sections were provided here.

SL68.0 Convoy Duty

by Theodore L. Black

Ships were short in Y171 when the Federation sent a desperately needed convoy of military hardware to the Kzinti. The convoy route was well beyond the range of any Klingon raiders, but Klingon-hired pirates tried to waylay the convoy.

SL69.0 Counterpunch

by Doug Turnage

Typical of many actions that took place along the Federation-Romulan frontier during the General War, this battle represented a Romulan attempt, in Y172, to capture a small mining planet in the neutral zone.
