Background

The Niagara class fast cruiser represented a new wave of starship design, and was based on specifications created for the Galaxy Class Development Project.[1]

Essentially a smaller version of the Galaxy class, the Niagara class was intended for shorter missions within Federation space, and was commonly assigned to diplomatic and cultural relations missions. Since their lush accommodations made them the preferred method of travel for diplomats throughout the Federation, ships of the class were a common sight in orbit over political and trade conferences.[1]

One of the first classes designed to be capable of completing a narrow, mission-specific profile, but also capable of a variety of other duties, the Niagara class paved the way for initiatives like the Perimeter Defense Directive in later decades.[1]
