The Skyhawk (SKA) class destroyer was a variant of the Seahawk class frigate, and was designed to be the consort to the Sparrowhawk class cruiser. Using a slightly modified F-5 class boom, which the Romulan shipyards could build, and the same engines as the Sparrowhawk, construction was highly simplified. A module could be inserted into the rear of the basic hull in order to change the ship into any of a number of variants, a change that could be made in a matter of days at a shipyard, starbase, or fleet repair dock.

The SKA, introduced in 2272, featured a crew complement of 220, a capacity of seven shuttlecraft, and was equipped with two science labs, two transporters, and four tractor beam emitters. The SKA was armed with two Type-F plasma torpedo tubes, four banks of Type-1 phasers, and four banks of Type-3 phasers.

Intended for raids rather than deliberate ground assaults, the SKG troop transport variant, introduced in 2276, was often included in fleets where the mission was to capture enemy ships. The SKG featured a crew complement of 300 — including 130 Marines housed in 4 barracks — a capacity of seven shuttlecraft, and was equipped with two science labs, four transporters, and four tractor beam emitters. The SKG was armed with two Type-F plasma torpedo tubes, two banks of Type-1 phasers, and two banks of Type-3 phasers.

The ultimate member of the Skyhawk class, the SKL destroyer leader variant pushed the design to (and beyond) the absolute limit. The boom section was replaced with an entirely new design with sufficient structural strength on which to mount a Type-G plasma torpedo launcher. The conversion to the SKL specifications was a permanent one, requiring a shipyard and considerable time, and the ship lost its module ability in the conversion, due to the placement of support structures. The SKL featured a crew complement of 250, a capacity of seven shuttlecraft, and was equipped with two science labs, two transporters, and four tractor beam emitters. The SKL was armed with one Type-G plasma torpedo tube, two Type-F plasma torpedo tubes, four banks of Type-1 phasers, and four banks of Type-3 phasers.[1]
