The Space Shuttle program was an early space program from the United States of America on Earth in the late 20th Century. The first shuttle was named Enterprise.[1] Space Shuttle flights began in 1980 as available payload space was booked full. Prototypes developed aboard the Space Shuttles laid the groundwork for future space industry, and experiments carried out aboard its modular Spacelab provided invaluable data concerning long-term space radiation exposure and the nature of Earth's upper atmosphere. The Space Shuttle program was perhaps most noteworthy for constructing the first Orbital Solar Power satellites. The Space Shuttle program was retired in 1992 after 553 missions.[2]
