Perhaps the most famous spacecraft in the history of space exploration, the {{link|Prime|United Federation of Planets||Federation}} Starship ''Enterprise,'' a {{link|Prime|Constitution class||''Constitution'' class}} cruiser,<ref name="TOS42"/> was launched in {{link|Prime|2245}}<ref name="ENT95"/> from the {{link|Prime|San Francisco Fleet Yards}}<ref name="TOS01"/> orbiting {{link|Prime|Earth}}. During the {{link|Prime|Klingon War (23rd Century)||Klingon-Federation War}} from {{link|Prime|2256|May|2256}} through {{link|Prime|2257|November|2257}}, the ''Enterprise'' was ordered to remain in deep space, away from the conflict. By the time the war was over and the ''Enterprise'' returned to Federation space in {{link|Prime|2258}}, the ship was badly damaged and required months of extensive repairs. While the repairs were underway, Captain Pike took temporary command of the {{link|Prime|U.S.S. Discovery NCC-1031||U.S.S. ''Discovery'' NCC-1031}}, and the repairs were overseen by his first officer, {{link|Prime|Starfleet Lieutenant Commander||Lieutenant Commander}} {{link|Prime|Una Chin-Riley}}.<ref name="DSC16"/><ref name="DSC18"/>

The ''Enterprise'' was refit several times during its lifetime, most notably from {{link|Prime|2270}} to {{link|Prime|2273}}, when the ship was virtually rebuilt from the inside out.<ref name="ST01"/> Though commanded by Captain {{link|Prime|Will Decker}} during the refit, Kirk&mdash;who had been promoted to {{link|Prime|Starfleet Admiral||admiral}} in {{link|Prime|2270}}&mdash;took temporary command of the vessel during the {{link|Prime|V'ger}} incident of {{link|Prime|2273}}; Decker was lost during the mission,<ref name="ST01"/> and Kirk took command of the ''Enterprise'' for another five-year mission. Following that five-year mission, Kirk retired<ref name="ST07"/> in {{link|Prime|2278}}, and the ship became a training vessel at {{link|Prime|Starfleet Academy}} under Captain {{link|Prime|Spock}}.<ref name="ST02"/> In {{link|Prime|2285}}, Kirk had returned to duty<ref name="ST07"/> as commandant of the academy, and again took temporary command of the ''Enterprise'' while overseeing a cadet cruise when the ship encountered {{link|Prime|Khan Noonien Singh}} in the {{link|Prime|Mutara Sector}}. Spock was killed saving the ship,<ref name="ST02"/> but the ''Enterprise'' was later destroyed by Admiral Kirk just prior to its anticipated decommissioning, in order to prevent it from falling into {{link|Prime|Klingon Empire||Klingon}} hands during a mission to recover Captain Spock's body.<ref name="ST03"/>
