Commonly found leading reserve forces and secondary battle lines during large-scale conflicts, the New Orleans class frigate was designed during the early period of tensions with the Cardassian Union and first commissioned in 2332. Often forming the core of sector defense groups, most were assigned to regular patrol duty along the Federation's frontier borders, and were often among the first to respond to new threats as a result.[1]
The New Orleans class followed function over form, and lacked many of the amenities found on larger ships. Tactical and defensive systems were boosted, often surprising enemies with the deceptive maneuverability, firepower, and toughness of the class.[1]
