The First World War was a global conflict on Earth that lasted from 1914 through 1918, and was fought between two coalitions of nations: an alliance known as the Central Powers, consisting of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire, and the Allied Powers, consisting of the United Kingdom, France, Russia, Italy, Japan, and, after 1917, the United States of America.[1] The conflict was of immense historical significance, resulting in an estimated 6 million dead.[2]
