According to Nero, the Kimben system, which was located in a remote part of the Romulan Star Empire, contained a "small deposit" of decalithium, which Ambassador Spock needed to create a supply of red matter in the hope of preventing the Hobus star from going supernova. Before the Narada could mine enough decalithium for the project, the ship was attacked by Remans.[1] The tables were quickly turned with the timely arrival of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-E, however, and Captain Data confiscated the decalithium found aboard the Reman ships as contraband, and provided it to the Narada to provide the needed supply before they ran out of time to create the red matter.[2]
