Construction on the Federation Starship Copernicus, a Ptolemy class transport, was authorized by the Star Fleet Appropriation of Stardate 0965[1] and commissioned circa 2188.[2]

Soon after Stardate 3040.2, the Copernicus, outfitted as a science vessel, rendezvoused with the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 at Ramedes III, where it took on Rell, a "worldsinger" from Theta VII.[3]
