Commissioned in 2285, the Federation Starship Excelsior, known as the "Great Experiment," served as a test-bed for experiments with transwarp drive.[1] Originally under the command of Captain Styles,[1] in 2290 command was transferred to Captain Hikaru Sulu. The ship spent the next three years conducting a survey of gaseous planetary anomalies in the Beta Quadrant. On Stardate 9521.6, the Excelsior was traveling near the Klingon Neutral Zone when it was struck by a subspace shockwave generated by the explosion of Praxis, a Klingon moon. Two months later, the ship played a key role in the defeat of a rogue Bird-of-Prey commanded by General Chang, as well as the uncovering of a conspiracy to sabotage the Khitomer Conference, an major step on the road to peace between the Klingon Empire and the Federation.[2]
