The Marconi was a Verne class cruiser. On Reference Stardate 0/9510.21 (21 October 2095), a number of very small, automated starship-detection probes set up in Sector 7L were destroyed by unknown forces, presumed to be pirates but later determined to be Romulans. The Marconi, responsible for patrolling the sector, was unable to respond in time to pursue the attacking ships. Within two months of the incident, the Verne class was removed from active service; while well-armed, the slow top speed of the class had proven inadequate for patrol duties.[1]
