After Natasha Yar traveled back in time to 2344 aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-C,[1] she and the other survivors aboard the ship were captured by the Romulans at Narendra III. Yar agreed to become the mistress of the prison camp's commanding officer in exchange for sparing the lives of the others, and their union produced a child: Sela.[2]
Sela ousted former Praetor Taris from power, and named herself Empress. Following the destruction of Romulus, she was not afraid to use the Tal Shiar and the Romulan military to bring wayward systems back under Imperial control. Sela made many enemies during her rise to power. When the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire formally recognized the breakaway Romulan Republic at Khitomer in 2409, Sela responded by attacking the conference.[3]
